Finishes

WOOD SHADES

Picture
UNFINISHED - All natural
A unique driftwood style finish. This unfinished finish really sets off natural, rustic, country and beach style themes. As there is no protection offered care must be taken when handling to ensure you don't 'dirty' the wood. Whilst we take great care in sanding down rough edges, there will always be a small chance of splinters. Due to the unique nature of wood colour will vary.

Light Oak Wood Finish
CLEAR COAT - Protective Layer
A smooth and silky finish that reveals natural yellow wood tones. A top coat offers protection from surface wood dust, splinters or marks being left on the surface of the wood. This won't hide or fill any cracks or crevices that are a key feature of reclaimed wood. Colour will vary depending on each individual piece of wood but work particularly well if your item has got a painted design.

LIGHT OAK - Medium Tone
Highlights natural warmth giving a traditional country cottage feel as well as fitting well in bright, neutral and natural schemes. Offering colour consistency, light oak strikes a good balance between the natural tonal differences that occur in clear coat and the statement dark oak which sits well in bold or striking interiors.

Dark Oak Wood Finish
DARK OAK - Dark Tone
Achieved using a quality wax to highlight
rich characteristics. This finish fills in any surface markings, splits or dents with a dark tone whilst giving a deep, warm finish to the surface. Great for reclaimed and Industrial style themes adding a touch of oppulance and sophistication in both modern and traditional designs.
Please be aware that colours may vary in accordance to your computer / software / print settings. To be used as a guide only.

PAINT FINISHES

Picture
PRIMER
Think of this like a foundation. After sanding, it's the first coat of paint to go on any of our painted furniture before we can make it beautiful! It's essential to provide good adhesion to top coats of paint and stop any colour bleeding or stains showing through. Be very wary of furniture that hasn't been primed as it might look great now but a few months down the line this may not still be the case. It's all in the prep peeps! Some of our furniture can be 100 years old, we'd hate to ruin it now with lazy craftmanship.

EGGSHELL
Personally, this is my favourite paint to work with. It offers a flawless, smooth and hardwearing finish. Available in oil or water based finishes (I really rate the water based for ease of use). Eggshell paints have a lovely low level lustre that manages to look great on both classic & contemporary style furniture alike. It works beautifully in contast to metal detailing and adds a timeless yet classic look that is so important in bridging the gap between the old look of your furniture and the new style of your makeover.

SATIN
Satin paint is designed to sit on wood and metal. It offers a highly protective finish and more gloss than eggshell. A firm favourite for woodwork around the house - kitchen/bathroom cupboards, skirting and doors etc. I would always recommend it for items exposed to significant amounts of grease, grime or moisture.
The benefit of a satin finish over eggshell is its durability and the huge variety in colour options available to you, and personal preference of course ;-)

MATT & GLOSS
So you may be wondering why I've put matt and gloss in the same section when they are the opposite of each other! I rarely work with either finish on furniture. A high gloss finish is time comsuming and can be more problematic to work. It  can quickly look quite dated unless worked with a specific scheme. There is a time and place for it though so I would never rule it out completely. Matt and chalk paints offer little protection to furniture. They soak up stains and mark easily. The answer to this is to finish with a top coat of wax or lacquer to provide the protection needed.

FURNITURE CARE

Keep furniture out of direct sunlight and areas that experience extreme changes of temperature such as conservatories. Wood will change colour, move and possibly crack. Avoid placing next to windows, central heating or air conditioning.
Clean up spills straight away and protect from hot cups, plates and liquids and remember to polish waxed furniture every 6 months. The reclaimed timber we use has a live grain and will be unique. Small cracks, knots and imperfections as well as
the minor marks and knocks picked up through use will add character and over time the colour and texture will acquire its own patina as the wood mellows.

LACQUERED FURNITURE
Many of our items have been finished with a clear protective top coat. This offers added protection and can be wiped clean using a damp cloth or a non-silicone ammonia-free furniture polish, such as Natural Beeswax Polish. Do not clean with solvents, alcohol or cleaning products as this may damage the surface.

WAXED FURNITURE
Wax should be re-applied every six months to avoid your wood from drying out and to maintain a layer of protection. Lightly buff out any marks using wire wool and re-apply sparingly with a lint free cloth in a circular motion. When dry buff to a shine with a shoe shine style brush.

OILED FURNITURE
Oil will help stop any unfinished wood from drying out and therefore splitting. Once a year, apply furniture oil using a lint free cloth following the grain of the wood. Wipe off any excess and leave to soak in.

PAINTED & PAPERED FURNITURE
These will have been coated with a protective clear coat of lacquer. Simply wipe clean using a damp cloth free from any chemicals. Dry immediately.
